THE PECTORAL
SANDPIPER IS STILL HERE IN LA VERA
Like the Waxwing last winter,
Arctic visitors to our area always make us twitchier than any others. After
finding the Pectoral Sandpiper last Sunday, therefore, we returned this
afternoon to see if it was still there.
We found it without any
difficulty, probing the riverside mud in pretty much the same spot. It’s not
every day you see a Pectoral Sandpiper so I decided to creep up to it on my
belly through the mud and marsh plants. It didn’t seem to mind even when I
eventually got very close, continuing to sleep and occasionally preen as though
I was nothing more than a strange-shaped bush. I hope you agree the photos are
worth the soaking they cost me.
